Graphing Recurrence Intervals

It should be apparent from the table that the larger discharges occur less frequently. We are going to represent this relationship graphically by plotting RI on the horizontal axis verses Q (discharge) on the vertical axis.

Drag each red symbol representing the RI of a certain discharge (Q) to its coordinate in the graph on the left.

Some points have already been plotted and others will be plotted automatically once you successful locate the five red symbols of the table. Be sure the click the "Fit Curve to Data" button when all the points are plotted.

Answer these questions

1. From the curve, what's the recurrence interval of a flood that has a discharge of 3000 cfs?
2. Although we have no historical data for a flood larger than one of 3620 cfs, we can use the graph to make a prediction. What's the predicted recurrence interval of a flood that has a discharge of 4000 cfs?
